INSTRUCTIONS

Task 1: Game Design Document

We were asked to design and create our own 2D side-scrolling/platformer game, using a game design document as a blueprint, to demonstrate our understanding of the technical knowledge required for game development.

Inspiration - Stardew Valley

I am not someone who plays games often, but my younger brother loves playing all kinds of games. Influenced by him, I started playing some Steam games, such as Overcooked, Moving Out, It Takes Two, and so on. Before I knew it, I began to love playing games. My favorite game among them is Stardew Valley. I try to explore my creativity and ideas within this game.

Game Ideation:

Title of my designed game:"Thorne's Adventure".

Story

In the peaceful village of Luminara, a sudden darkness descends, accompanied by the emergence of terrifying monsters. The village king, seeking a hero to save his people, summons Thorne, a renowned adventurer known for his bravery and skill. Thorne learns that the monsters have stolen valuable diamonds essential to the village's prosperity. Tasked with retrieving the diamonds and vanquishing the monsters, Thorne embarks on a perilous quest to restore peace and prosperity to Luminara.

Challenge

The game presents players with various challenges, including navigating treacherous terrain, defeating increasingly powerful monsters, and solving puzzles to progress through each mission. As the game progresses, the monsters become more formidable, requiring players to upgrade their weapons and hone their combat skills to overcome them.

Strategy

Players must employ strategic thinking to succeed in "Thorne's Adventure." This includes carefully managing their health and energy levels, choosing the right weapons and tools for each situation, and using the environment to their advantage. Additionally, players can strategise by prioritising which monsters to defeat first and deciding when to use special abilities or items.

Chance

There are elements of chance in "Thorne's Adventure," such as the random placement of monsters and items within each scene, as well as the possibility of encountering rare creatures or discovering hidden secrets. Players may also encounter unexpected events or obstacles that require quick thinking and adaptability to overcome.

Choice

Throughout the game, players have the freedom to make choices that impact the outcome of their quest. This includes deciding which missions to undertake, how to approach combat encounters, and which paths to take through the game world. Additionally, players may encounter moral dilemmas or branching storylines that allow them to shape the narrative according to their actions.

Game Development-Task 1

Reflection

This project marked my first experience learning and designing a 2D game, and it has been an incredibly rewarding journey. I have always loved the pixel art style, and incorporating it into my game has been a delightful creative process. Using inspiration from my favourite video game, I was able to extend a new idea and bring it to life, which made me very happy. As I worked through the project, I realised that there are still some areas in my initial document that could be improved. However, I am excited about the final product and look forward to seeing it come together. I hope to apply what I’ve learned and do even better in the next task.
