Game Studies-Project 1
INSTRUCTIONS
Project 1-Propose a tabletop game design
In week 2, me and my teammates plan to go to a board game cafe to search for interesting board game to explore on our idea.
Before that, I have an idea of designing the new board game. Is a combination of Bingo+Monopoly+Mahjong.
Game rules:
- Every player get a mission card before the game start. The mission card is a 5x5 table with elements(food/item), players have to collect the item they need when playing the game.
- The board is like monopoly board, with number and elements that players need.
- Players roll the dice and go to the right box.
- In some box will have a element that player might need, and some will have punishment.
- When player get an element that they need, they must put it into the bingo table. If is an element that players no need, then player must play out the element and other player can rob it.
- Player who connect 5 lines will be the winner.
Game Cafe Visit
We decided to visit a board game cafe in Subang. We total played 3 tabletop game: Steam Up, The Malaysian Dream and Shadow Hunters.
Video of the process of playing the board game:

Steam Up: This game is quite fun, the most interesting game in three of this. In the recording, we can see we used around half and hour to understand the game rules including the part that explained by the clerk. After the explanation from the clerk, it's very easy to start playing the game. I places that I love the most of the game is the element used is very CUTE!! (and I love to eat dim sum xd). This game is a game that can be played repeatedly, because the game always has different characters and tasks, so players can experience different tasks every time they play, and they will not lose their novelty after playing it once or twice.
The Malaysian Dream: As a Malaysian must play this game, because there are a lot of content that only Malaysian know! The rules is easy to understand, we used about 15 minutes to understand the it. However, me, as an Introvert, there is a number of 'mission' that is quite embarrassed is totally a punishment for me! Although there are few character with different abilities but I feel like it will feel bored after you play a few time but overall the game experience still not bad for the first time to play it.
Shadow Hunters: This is also very interesting but I used a lot of time to understand the rules (around 40 minutes...). There are a total of 5 of us playing, but I think a few more people will have a better experience, because this is a game with teammates. It just so happens that this time I have no teammates for my character. This is also can play repeatedly, because there are 3 types of character, and in every character there are a number of different abilities. At the same time, you will met different teammate in different game, so is quite fun.
Back to my ideation, Steam up is the a liiiiittle similar with my idea, to collect/complete the mission that you got. The cafe crew suggest us to play "Azul" when he listen to my idea. (but is late so we did not play that).

| Fig 2.4 New idea |
After we visit the game cafe, we got new idea from the game we played in the cafe. Dean came up with a idea from 'Shadow Hunters' that something having teammates and try to destroy other kingdom. Combining ms Anis feedback, we decided to explore on this topic.
We refined the rules before the pre-alpha playtest. The game rules are different for odd number of players and even number of players. In team-based, players will have a teammates, players have to protect their teammates to avoid others attack. For solo mode, players can just attack any player to win the game. And there are wild cards (power card) for players to use in the game, this enhance the interest of the game.
