Information Design-Flip topic
INSTRUCTIONS
Group Task
Exercise 1: Infographic
We were asked to create a slide about Infographics.
Content required: Different types of infographics + the kind of information they’re applicable for + an example for each identified type
Exercise 2: L.A.T.C.H
We were asked to create slides to explain L.A.T.C.H., and we added the definition, benefit, and examples.
Exercise 3: Miller's Law (Chunking)
We were asked to create slides to explain the topic and provide an example of how to best utilize this technique in terms of visual delivery for each of these approaches:
- A well-designed infographic
- UX/UI, web, app, games (screen-based basically!)
- Processes
Exercise 4: Manuel Lima's 9 Directives Manifesto
We were asked to create slides to explain this topic and find one example of how to best display and utilize design for each of the directives.
In conclusion, do also present one good designed infographic that best illustrates the 9 directives for information visualizations and one poorly designed infographic that failed to address the directives.
Individual Task
Exercise 1: Re-design infographic poster
- Use a free online infographic tool and re-design one poorly constructed infographic poster
- Present the redesigned infographics with before and after comparisons
- Personal rating and review of the online tool
- Difficulty, intuitiveness
- Usefulness
- Design templates, choices
- lack of title
- repeated content
I redesign the poster by using canva tools. I search for a bar chart infographic template and change the theme colour to pink and blue by following the topic of gender. Because of the original picture without a title, I just left XXX in my redesign poster.
The rate for canva:
Difficulty: 1/10★
The operation mode of Canva is clear at a glance, and it is very easy to operate. Even first-time users will not be confused about how to operate.
Usefulness: 8/10★
The functions of Canva are quite complete. For example various gifs and elements, background removal functions, photo colour correction functions, multi-person simultaneous editing functions, etc. In addition, most of the materials are free, which is very suitable for students to use.
Design templates/Choices: 9/10★
Canva has very diverse templates, such as birthday cards, business cards, posters, ig story formats, and more. Most of them are free to use! Even if a small part needs to be paid, the monthly fee will not be expensive, if you often use canvas.
