Project 2-Sense of Place
INTRODUCTION
LECTURES
The Importance of Observation
- Being observant means to be attentive to your surroundings, to pay attention to the details and to be analytical about them.
- For a designer, observation can be an effective way to get ideas. Sources of observation can stem from artifacts, daily happenings, physical surroundings, and such.
- Observing is an active act of acquiring information, through the senses, of a subject matter in its natural setting.
- Observation is important to designers as it enables them to see “problems”, as well as getting ideas for solutions to those problems.
Ways to Improve your Powers of Observation:
- Know you subject
- Slow down and look outward
- Try something new: engage your sense & heighten awareness
- Improve your concentration by cutting out distraction: turn off your phone & go somewhere quiet
- Challenge yourself to a mental workout: to have more smarter and agile brain
- Test your observation by playing a memory game
- Record and consider your observations
- Stay inquisitive: question and analyze your observations
“All we have to
believe is our senses:
the tools we use to
perceive the world,
our sight, our touch,
our memory. If they
lie to us, then
nothing can be
trusted.

Project 2 - Sense of Place
Recap
Sense of Place
- Suitable design principles are applied to create effective visuals
What we need to do: Think of a place and how should I express my sense of that place
So I have two places that I will try on it: Taylor's library and Sarawak Silabur cave.

Fig 2.1 & Fig 2.2-Photography in Taylor's library taken by myself
This is a group of pictures in Taylor's library. Before returning home, I usually stay in the library after class to avoid traffic jams. The library is a tranquil place for learning and doing homework. I like the quiet feeling of staying in the library.

Fig 2.5 & Fig 2.6-Photography in Sarawak taken by myself
This is a group of pictures I took at Silabur cave in Kuching, Sarawak. This is my idea inspiration came from. I stand in the forest and the surrounding rows are full of trees. That day was a very adventurous mountain climbing experience, very special and hard, so I decided to add it to my work.

Beach is a place that lets me feel relaxed and comfortable, so I also added some elements related to the sea into my composition.

Idea Exploration and Description
Sketches:

Fig 2.3-attempt 1
Fig 2.4-attempt 2
For attempts 1 and 2, I refer to the picture I took and draw the background by myself. In the sketches, I try to express the boy as the normality in the library, with everyone in the library studying hard. In attempt 2, the place where the boy sitting is in a corner. It is the best place in the library for me. It can protect our privacy, and not feel uncomfortable when others see the computer screen, and this seat will not feel too cold. I prefer attempt 2 more than attempt 1 because the composition for attempt 2 is more interesting. I haven't thought about how to present this work, should I use AI simple style, sketch style or abstract style.
Fig 2.8-attempt 3
For attempt 3, my idea is inspired by fig 2.6 and fig 2.7. I stood on the bridge in the middle, with two rows of trees beside me, and there was a sea below. I'm trying to show that there is an endless road ahead, and we don’t know what surprises or difficulties await us. For this artwork, my idea is to use the way of collage to present. I want to show this work in a collage or layered (Fig 1.2) way.

Fig 3.4-photo from Pinterest (https://pin.it/3TK7gqZ)
Since I wasn't very satisfied with the first composition, I was looking for other photos I took at that time. On a whim, I tried to combine photos of caves (fig 3.1 & fig 3.2) and trees (fig 3.3), to make my art look similar to the feel of fig 3.4. Combining the tree and the rock becomes a forest from a perspective from below.

After I have the idea of how am I going to draw on the composition, I found that using illustration art to present my work is the most suitable way. I refer to a few references from the Internet, and I decided to go with the style in fig 3.7.
Sketches:

Fig 3.8-process of attempt 4
Here is my idea of combining the two photos. I still remember that when I was climbing the mountain, I was really tired, but every time I walked forward, there was some beautiful scenery that I had never seen before. Nature is a very magical thing, it is dangerous, but after the danger is very beautiful scenery. So in addition to combining the two photography, I decided to add my feelings at that time, such as shock when seeing the scenery, mystery, dream, etc. elements into my work.

Final Outcome:

Fig 4-Final outcome of sense of place
I reduced the sunlight and the 'bubbles' and added some shadows to look more solid.
I loved the theme I had chosen for my artwork this time. It represents the beauty of nature. I really love the jungle track after going to Silabur cave, it is not only a sport, but it is also a chance to let people who live in the city know how beautiful is the natural. Using artwork to record the beauty of the scenery is what I always wanted to do and finally, I can take this opportunity to do it so.
Design Principles: Harmony, Balance, Movement
I have almost 80% and above using green colour in my work. The green colour brings a comfortable and relaxed feeling. My work is only painted with green and brown colours, which shows the harmony of nature.
There is sunlight shining which brings warmth into the forest. It makes the tranquil forest become vivid and brings a sense of hope. In addition, the tree leaves surrounded the trunk and expand from the bottom to above, showing a sense of movement.
That is also asymmetrical balance in the work. Those trees are evenly distributed on both sides of the work. Those swallows and bubbles are also surrounded equally over the work.
Feedback
Week 9
Add a description after the recap to let people know which places is me going to do. Do not use the folder link for the reference link (Pinterest), must use the original link of the picture.
Idea 1 (library): take more pictures of the library from different angles. Figure out how the stranger boy shows a sense of quiet if I want to use that boy as the main theme.
Idea 2 (Sarawak): my description should be more detailed about why am I putting those elements. This work is interesting if I did well in the final outcome. Do not put elements for no reason! This is a very big mistake in design.
Week 10
That's a good composition. There are only a few places that need to change. The sunlight is too heavy (too many, can reduce a lil bit). I can reduce the bubbles quantity and figure out how can the bubbles look more similar to tree leaves without reading the description.
Reflection
Week 8
After listening to Ms briefing, I started to think about which places are memorable to me. I remembered that I went to Sarawak a few months ago. The scenery there is very beautiful, and the experience of jungle tracking is also very special. The road is very rugged when climbing the mountain, but it is worth seeing the beautiful scenery. So I choose a few pictures that are meaningful and try to work on them in my work. I only come out with one sketch because I have no idea how should I show the sense of place in the jungle. I don't want to be too hasty in deciding what effect I want in the end, I hope I can explore slowly and find the most suitable expression for my final outcome.
For another idea, I was studying in Taylor's library around 8pm, there are almost no people in the library so it is super quiet. That makes me more focused on my study so I decided to try a sketch on it.
Week 9
I have decided to choose the forest idea as my final outcome content. I refer to more references and get an idea of a different perspective from my work before. I almost finished the work but it still has some details that need to touch up. I will listen to ms feedback and only continue with the work to make sure I did not make any mistakes.
Week 10
I did not drastically modify my work, I only modify where ms asked to change it and added some detail on shadows.
